Edith Beatrice Mary Williams (1875-1886)

On 17th September 1886 Edith (11) of Mount Staurt Sqaure, daughter of Christian and Maria Jane Williams - clerk, was playing with friends in Cardiff when they came across an unattended bonfire. Edith's skirt caught fire and her legs and lower body was badly burned, She died two weeks later, from the effects of the burns.

The Coroner , Mr E B Reece heard at the Inquest that a boy was pulling burning sticks out of the fire and throwing them at the other children, thus setting Edith's dress on fire. A definite case therefore of Manslaughter, but as there was a chance that a spark could have ignited the dress, a verdict of "Accidental death" was returned.
