Philip Turnbull (1850-1925)

Turnbull Brothers. The Turnbulls were involved in shipping at Whitby where, from 1871 onwards, they built their own steamers. In 1877 the brothers Lewis and Philip Turnbull moved to Cardiff and five years later bought Everilda for use on the coal and iron trades with Spain. Up to 1900 their vessels were built by the Turnbull yard at Whitby, and included Gwendoline, Bernard, Illtyd, and Erie. Their ships had all been financed on the sixty-fourth system, but the joint-stock Turnbull Brothers Shipping Company Ltd was set up in 1910.
