SHOCKING FATAL ACCIDENT AT GRANGE TOWN.
Alfred Coles, a goods guard in the employ of the Tail Vale Railway Company, on Friday night received fatal injuries on the Ely Harbour Branch at Ferry-road, Grangetown. Deceased was on the last wagon of a coal train,, coming from the Ferry-road high level, when he seems accidentally to have fallen, and seventeen wagons and the engine passed over his body, inflicting shocking injuries. The right arm and shoulder Were smashed to a pulp, the right side of the face was obliterated. and the poor fellow received other terrible injuries. Police-sergeant Harris (Grangetown) and a constable conveyed the remains to the mortuary. Deceased lived at 39, Bromsgrove-Street (Grange). He was 53 years of age, and had been 30 years in the employ of the Taff Company. Deceased leaves a widow, a. daughter aged sixteen, and a son a. few years older, who is a coupler in the same employ.
CARDIFF RAILWAY GUARD KILLED.
An inquest was held by Mr. E. Bernard Bees, deputy-coroner, at Cardiff on Saturday touching the death of Alfred Coles. 39, Bromsgrove-street. Cardiff, who was accidentally run over and killed on the previous evening by a Taff Vale Railway Company's coal train, of which, he was guard. Robert Price, of Llandaff Yard, fireman on the engine of the same train, stated that he last saw the deceased at seven o'clock, when he was on the buffer of the front wagon, and gave the signal to- start. They had only gone about fifteen yards, and were moving very slowly, -when the brakesman (Shirlington) looked out to see that the points were all right, and saw Coles on the line. They pulled up at once, and found the body of the man lying by the rails, twisted about. He was quite dead. The wheels appeared to have gone right over the middle of his body. Mr. Harold Lloyd watched the proceedings on behalf of the relatives of the deceased, and Chief-inspector R. J. Ponsford was present for the Taff Vale Railway. A verdict of Accidental death was returned.
