Thomas Caler, a 23-year-old steamship fireman from Zanzibar, cut the throats of Caerphilly-born Gladys and her 8 month old baby daughter , Aysha with a razor at Gladys's Arab refreshment house in Christina Street, Cardiff Docks. As per the post mortem Thomas had raped Gladys and stole a gramophone and some cash. Although Thomas pleaded not guilty, he was found guilty and hanged on 14th April 1920 at Cardiff.
