For Conspicuous Gallantry and devotion to duty .
He was in command of a Patrol of one Platoon which was
Fired on by the Enemy at short range . He led his men into
attack and captured an Officer and eleven men. Engaged the Enemy
inflicting heavy casualties on them. Bringing back two of his wounded men.
He set a magnificent example of courage and Initiative.

On 3 Feb 1918 Emmanuel was a master mariner on board the cargo ship SS Holmtown travelling from Rouen to Cardiff, when it was sunk by UB59 east of the Shambles light house in the English Channel. All 15 crew were lost. Emmanuel’s body was washed ashore at Kimmeridge Bay, Dorset, on 7 Feb 1918. |

Captain in the Suffolk Regiment who fell in Battle near Hulluch in France on 13 October 1915 aged 20 years. LOOS MEMORIAL Panel 37 and 38. Son of Mr. W. R. and Mrs. J. C. Sorley, of St. Giles', Chesterton Lane, Cambridge. Sorley was educated at Marlborough and won a scholarship to University College, Oxford. He enlisted in August 1914 and soon found himself in the trenches; he made Captain in August, 1915. Sorley was killed in action at Loos in October of the same year. His 'Marlborough and Other Poems' was published in 1916 and ran into four editions. It was said that Sorley had a real gift for rhyming. |
